George McFetridge

Biography

GEORGE McFETRIDGE (pianist) was born in Edmonton. Alberta. Canada.  He attended the University of Alberta there. before continuing his studies at the Berklee School of Music in Boston.   After graduating from Berklee. he landed a stint touring the United States with the Buddy Rich Big Band. before relocating to Toronto where he taught at Humber College from 1985 and 1992. and performed in clubs and in television bands.

He co-founded the United Records cooperative while he was still living in Toronto. aproject that is credited with helping many of Canada’s emerging musicians to reach wider audiences. Mike Murley. Barry Elmes. and Bernie Senensky among them.

Now based in Vancouver. McFetridge has performed with some of the world’s leading jazz artists including Fraser MacPherson. Woody Herman. Benny Golson. Lee Konitz . Kenny Wheeler. Woody Shaw. and Phil Woods. and toured throughout Europe with Jacek Kochon and Mariusz Kwiatowski. He leads the ‘Strange Weather’ Quintet and the ‘YT’ Quartet.

George McFetridge was featured on five separate occasions in the “Sound of Toronto Jazz” Concert Series at the Ontario Science Centre. leading his own George McFetridge Trio on November 19. 1979. and performing as a member of the Pat LaBarbera Quartet. the Terry Lukiwski Quartet. the Peter Leitch Quartet. and the Steve Lederer Quintet during the early 1980s.
